Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricane season in Cayman runs from 1st June - 30th November, which means Hurricane season is right around the corner, and now is the time to start getting prepared. As Grand Cayman is a very flat island, problems are created when sea levels start to rise due to a storm surge, so make sure that in the event of a major hurricane, that you can move to at least 10 feet above sea level. You should also consider finding higher ground to park your vehicle. Camana Bay offers a service, where for CI$100 per year, you can store your car in one of their multi-level car parks whenever a major storm threatens.

In general, due to strict building codes, most modern buildings on island are built to withstand a category three hurricane, and some are even rated to withstand a category five hurricane.

A very good hurricane information pack is available from Hazard Management Cayman Islands (Tel: (345) 945 4624) or can be downloaded from www.caymanprepared.gov.ky.

Don't wait until a Hurricane is foretasted to get prepared, start preparing now!

10 Things that you should never ever put on your resume

Having recruited for a few years now, no matter where I am recruiting – Cayman Islands, Boston or the UK, many candidates around the world have trouble formulating an effective resume. Therefore, to do my bit – I would like to share my top ten tips of what not to put on your resume. Here goes…

Cover letters are not always necessary, especially if you are sending your resume to a recruiter.

Think about it, all day every day recruiters are sifting through hundreds of resumes. The last thing you want to do is write a four paragraph cover letter that features lengthy, fluffy sentences like “Dear sir/Madam, I would like to apply for X position within your organization as I am a hard-working, trustworthy, dedicated and punctual person.” If you do want to send across a cover letter make it direct, concise and catch the readers attention.

Steer clear of crazy fonts

The biggest turn off for any employer is a resume that has Comic Sans, Times New Roman and Brush Script MT all over it. Keep the fonts consistent. Use black colour only. Remember this is a potential employer and you want to come across as professional as possible.

No crazy objective

Sure, everyone wants to be Bill Gates and you might even have the entrepreneurial skills to do it.  Just please do not put this in your objective. This seals the deal for the rest  of your resume not being read. Personally, I do not think objectives are necessary but if you are set on having one – make it relevant. No fluff. “Exercise proven knowledge of Anti Money Laundering regulations within a global financial services organization in an offshore jurisdiction.”

Keep it Impersonal

One of my biggest pet hates is a resume that states “I efficiently managed the branch”, “I promoted products” This is not professional. Try “Efficiently managed the branch” and “Promoted products.”

Avoid featuring irrelevant job experience

If you are applying for a Legal Secretary position, why would you provide half a page of information on your first two jobs out of school where you were a retails assistant at Asda? Tailor it to suit your audience. Unless your previous job experience has anything to the position you are applying for, the potential employer is not interested. Keep it relevant.

Physical characteristics

Hiring managers do not care if you are 5”11 or 4”8. Unless you are applying to a model agency, leave it off.

Strange Hobbies

It is no problem to feature one or two hobbies but avoid listing things such as “knitting sweaters for my 12 cats”. If absolutely necessary, stick to reading, writing, travelling.

Private matters

Sexual orientation, marital status, religious and political affiliations should never feature on a resume. Leave them out. These are often controversial and you want to be judged on your professional experience instead.

Bad grammar and bad spelling

Goes without saying, but seriously – get some to proof-read it. This is an instant fail. What kind of first impression does it give?

Unprofessional contact information

If your email address is hotbabe@hotmail.com do not include this on your resume. Email accounts are free so I would advise getting a new more professional one.

May 19th is Discovery Day!

This coming Monday, May 19th we will enjoy another public holiday as we celebrate Discovery Day! In honor of the day, here are a few facts to aid you in ‘discovering’ more about the Islands. You may also click on the link below to learn more about our beautiful islands!

About Grand Cayman – Culture

Grand Cayman boasts the largest population of the three sister islands, representing diverse cultures from across the globe with cultural influences primarily from the United Kingdom, North America, and nearby Jamaica.

While English is the primary and official language, Caymanian residents speak it with a sing-song lilt, likely a combination of accents from European & Jamaican settlers. It is with this lilting accent that you will be pleasantly greeted – Caymanians are very friendly, and kind greetings are commonly exchanged.

There are many restaurants on Grand Cayman, conveniently located near The Avalon’s spacious Cayman condos. Restaurant fare ranges from beach casual to fine dining with a variety of international flavours, but the cuisine primarily reflects the island’s proximity to the sea as well as to Jamaica with a large selection of succulent seafood and spicy Jamaican seasonings.

A peaceful community with a thriving heritage of folklore, music, and customs passed down through the generations, Grand Cayman is not well known for its active nightlife. There are, however, plenty of activities to enjoy during daylight hours, including world-class diving – among the many appealing attractions that draw vacationers from around the world.

How to be more Productive

Joanna Sobczak-Michalowska has some fabulous tips on how to be more productive, and she suggests stop trying to manage your time.  Most of us think that time management is the key to being productive, but we do not have time to manage our time, which actually makes us even less productive, and can be extremely frustrating!
