During times like these, it is important to remember a couple of things:
- Be flexible. This will go a very long way. Take a temp job if you have to, or a lower salary (if you can) - making small concessions will show that you are motivated and willing.
- Make sure that your expectations are realistic and aligned with the current market. This doesn't mean that you should abandon your dreams of being a Vice President - it just means you need to be realistic about how you can get there.
- Don't forget your manners - although it can be frustrating to hear "Sorry, we have nothing available at this time" over and over again, you should NEVER verbalize or express this frustration to the recruiter or hiring manager. This will only hurt any chance you may have had of ever working with that company in the future. You do not want to burn any bridges before you even cross them, especially in a hurting economy or in a place as small as Cayman (people talk!).
- Don't give up - I am not suggesting that you should stalk employers and recruiters, but don't be discouraged by rejection letters from 5 different companies. The 6th letter you receive could be an offer of employment.
