How much would you sacrifice for your career?

For a lot of people today, a career is very important. It doesn't define who you are (well, it shouldn't) but it is what you do, and most of us (hopefully!) are doing what we love. During your career, there may be times when you have to sacrifice certain things in order to get ahead - but how much are you willing to sacrifice?

Working long hours and always being "on call", on the job stress and pressure, and business travel or corporate moves can make a job physically and mentally demanding, which can cause you to sacrifice your wellness, health and personal/family life.

"People enter demanding fields to accomplish important things and build careers, but the associated costs can lead to unhappiness and burnout. Remaining always on and constantly working can mean less time to devote to family, friends, or yourself. Performance may suffer if continued sacrifice leads to less personal energy and creativity." - Bill Barnett, HBR Blog.

Is it possible to still build our career while also mitigating the number of sacrifices we make? Yes, according to Barnett, it is possible. How? Set boundaries.
  1. Learn what's really required
  2. Identify your boundaries
  3. Start a discussion
  4. Decide whether the sacrifice is acceptable.
