Low Self-Confidence Linked with Success?

Quite often we are told that confidence is the key to getting ahead in your career, and succeeding in life and in business.

But what if that's not necessarily true? I just stumbled on an article on Business Insider titled "People with Low Self-Confidence are More Likely to be Successful" and was immediately intrigued.

The article suggests that low self-confidence is more likely to make you successful. You are probably shaking your head and wondering how that can be...

According to the article, the reason is "because those with lower self-confidence are able to digest negative feedback from bosses more easily. They're most able to take this criticism and turn it into something positive."

However, keep in mind that this does not include people with extremely low confidence who are "so low that they constantly suffer from anxiety or doubt everything they tackle."

Do you agree with this theory?

I think that we need to be confident in ourselves to a certain degree in order to be successful, or else we are always doubting ourselves or possibly shying away from certain initiatives because of a fear of failure. However, I do agree that someone who is over-confident might be unknowingly hindering their own success with unrealistic goals.

  1. I might say humble or shy as opposed to low self-confidence but I'd say there's merit in this - certainly in my own successes (although no one would ever believe I was once shy)!
