Live and Learn

Saturday 8th September marked this year’s International Literacy Day. In order to support and raise awareness of the global importance of literacy, the Cayman Rotaract club enlisted volunteers to read to the children of Prospect, North Side and East End primary schools. As a current guest of Rotaract, Rosie was lucky enough to be involved in the project and spent a hugely rewarding morning entertaining the children of Year 4 at Prospect. “Reading and writing skills are key to any child’s development and progress and it was an absolute joy to see the children engaged and alert throughout their stories” said Rosie. “Not only this but the level at which they interacted afterwards, and asked questions based on observations they had made, proves that being read aloud to triggers increased brain activity.”
“Literacy is not a luxury, it is a right and a responsibility.” (President Clinton on International Literacy Day 1994).
