5 Traits Employers are Looking for in a New Hire

Craig Cincotta who is the Vice President of Communications & Retail Marketing for Porch.com wrote a very interesting article recently, describing the 5 traits that employers should look for when hiring (as listed below).  If you are looking for a new job, do you have these 5 traits?
Are they Open-Minded?
  • The “best” hires can demonstrate a competency of open-mindedness. They can speak to a track record of working with many different types of people in many different situations. People who display a history of diverse experiences (in the office and outside of the office) often maintain high levels of empathy which is a great characteristic to have inside any corporate culture. The more empathetic they are to their internal stakeholders, the more they will understand the needs of the business and how their work can be used to help others.
Are they Measured?
  • The “best” hires can demonstrate enthusiasm for measurement and the role of goal setting. They don’t need to be data scientists or have a background in analytics. But when people are asking questions to understand the root of success for the business and how their work directly impacts and contributes to the broader business goals, then you know they are focused on outcomes over activities. If you can arm your business with people who are focused on the outcomes, you are well on your way towards creating a culture that is analytical and goal driven.
Are they Self-Aware?
  • The “best” hires know that they don’t know everything. They are aware of their strengths and limitations and can speak to them both with transparency and candor. In particular they can focus on specific areas they want to improve, grow, and learn. They spend more time talking about their losses (and what they learned) than their wins.
Are they Resilient?
  • The “best” hires know that mistakes and setbacks can be the catalyst for game changing ideas and new ways of doing business. They can highlight times when they dealt with a setback, learned from it, and persevered to create something even better than their original intention. They have handled their mistakes with grace and found a way to turn them into action rather than inaction.
Are they Curious?

  • The “best” hires know that learning never ends and they maintain a high degree of intellectual curiosity throughout their career. You will find that these hires stay on top of what is happening around them, the business, and the industry. They identify trends before they happen and they think in a very pragmatic way. This is a super-power not everyone possesses. When you find someone who is thinking about the world in a way that is bigger than themselves, snatch them up!
If you have all of these traits, well done! However, I would almost bet that we all could work on at least one of the above. So, work on these traits, strive to be better, and you will land your dream job!
