Stress management

Does life get a bit overwhelmed when dealing with stress? Some days can feel like a never ending challenge. Day to day you feel pressured, nervous tension and strain. Stress is a normal psychological and physical reaction to the ever-increasing demands of life. It happens and it will happen!

Stress management:
Stress management gives you a range of tools to reset your alarm system.
Without stress management, all too often your body is always on high alert. Over time, high levels of stress lead to serious health problems. Don't wait until stress has a negative impact on your health, relationships or quality of life. Start practicing a range of stress management techniques today.

Here are 5 quick and easy tips on how to overcome stress:

Take a break from the stressor - It may seem difficult to get away from a big work project, a crying baby or a growing credit card bill; But when you give yourself permission to step away from it, you let yourself have time to do something else, which can help you have a new perspective or practice techniques to feel less overwhelmed. It’s important to not avoid your stress (those bills have to be paid sometime), but even just 20-minutes to take care of yourself is helpful.

Exercise - By excising it benefits your mind just as well as your body. We keep hearing about the long-term benefits of a regular exercise routine. But even a 20-minute walk, run, swim or dance session in the midst of a stressful time can give an immediate effect that can last for several hours.

Smile and laugh - Our brains are interconnected with our emotions and facial expressions. When people are stressed, they often hold a lot of the stress in their face. So laughs or smiles can help relieve some of that tension and improve the situation.

Get social support - Call a friend, send an email. When you share your concerns or feelings with another person, it does help relieve stress. But it’s important that the person whom you talk to is someone whom you trust and whom you feel can understand and validate you. If your family is a stressor, for example, it may not alleviate your stress if you share your works woes with one of them.

Meditate - Meditation and prayer can help the mind and body to relax and focus. Mindfulness can help people see new perspectives, develop self-compassion and forgiveness. When practicing a form of mindfulness, people can release emotions that may have been causing the body physical stress. Much like exercise, research has shown that even meditating briefly can reap immediate benefits.

It's officially fall, which means Pumpkin spice everything!

I know that Grand Cayman does not necessary have "seasons" like in the UK, US and other parts of the world, however, yesterday, September 23rd was the first official day of fall.
Although temperatures in Cayman are still in the upper 80s, I still cannot help but want to make anything and everything to do with pumpkin! Below are a few of my favourite recipes, I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Pumpkin Pie Croissants (so easy, and delicious!):

Ingredients:
2 tubes of refrigerated crescent rolls
8 oz. block of cream cheese
1 c. canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
1 1/2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
3 T. sugar or splenda

Directions:
Heat oven to 375 degrees.Roll each crescent roll out lengthwise and cut in 1/2. Mix all ingredients together until nice and creamy. Spread 1 T. of the mixture onto each crescent roll and roll it up. Mix together 4 T. of sugar and 1 T. of pumpkin pie spice, roll each crescent in the mixture and
Bake at 375 for 15-18 minutes. Enjoy!

Pumpkin chocolate chip muffins:

Ingredients:
1 2/3 c. Flour
1 c. Sugar
1 T. Pumpkin Pie Spice
1 t. Baking Soda
1 t. Baking Powder
1/4 t. salt
2 Eggs
1 c. Pumpkin
1/2 c. Butter, softened
1 c. Chocolate Chips

Directions:
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease muffin cups. Thoroughly mix flour, sugar, pie spice, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in large bowl. Break eggs into another bowl. Add pumpkin and butter; whisk until well blended. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour over dry ingredients and fold in with a rubber spatula just until dry ingredients are moistened. Scoop batter evening into 12-15 muffin cups. Bake 20-25 minutes. You can substitute coconut oil for the butter to make it a bit more healthy, and of course you could put nuts instead of chocolate chips, if you want!

Pumpkin smoothie:

Ingredients

1 can of pumpkin pie filling
3 c. of whole milk (almond milk, soy milk or rice milk works great too!)
1/2 c. vanilla yogurt
A few dashes of cinnamon

Directions:
Well ahead of time, place pumpkin pie filling into a freezer-safe container. Freeze for a few hours or until frozen solid. To make the smoothie, add milk, and yogurt to a blender. Drop in the frozen pumpkin pie filling and blend until the frozen filling is completely pulverized. Add more milk or yogurt as needed to get it the consistency you'd like. Pour into individual glasses and sprinkle the tops with graham cracker crumbs (or a cinnamon/nutmeg mixture). Serve immediately!
*Note: Make a lower-calorie smoothie by using unsweetened/unflavored pumpkin puree, nonfat plain yogurt, and the sweetener of your choice.
Easy Roast pumpkin:

Ingredients:
3 c. pumpkin, chopped in 1 inch cubes
cinnamon to taste
coconut oil

Directions:
Heat oven to 375 degrees. Place chopped pumpkin onto a cookie sheet, drizzle with coconut oil. Sprinkle with cinnamon, and gently toss. Bake for 40 minutes or until the pumpkin is tender. Enjoy!

How to sell yourself, applying Richard Branson's 5 key elements to pitching

Having recently read a recent article by Virgin Group Founder Richard Branson, I thought it might be interesting to apply his 5 key elements on how to pitch to selling yourself as a candidate for a job:

1. What’s in it for them?
Branson informs us that any entrepreneur that is hoping to launch their first business often neglects to put much thought into the concept and this can therefore lead the investor to feel that they “lack clarity in the proposed deal.” What we can take from this from the perspective of a candidate pitching for a job? Remembering that you need to be specific in how you are selling your skills: “I have experience from X,Y and Z company undertaking skill X. Here is an example…” Being specific enables the employer to not only understand your abilities, but also to assess your transferability to their specific role. It is then that they realize what is in it for them. Your skills can be an asset to their company.

2. Be Clear
In a business sense, being clear according to Branson means “demonstrating a knowledge of your concept or industry and laying out a step-by-step plan.” This is excellent advice for job seekers. Be clear on what you have done and what you hope to gain from the position you are applying for. Tell the interviewer a story: “I single-handedly handled the compliance project for X company, whilst doing this I encountered an issue, I overcame the issue by…this meant that going forward..” This shows them in a very straightforward manner you have previous experience, encountered and issue, resolved and learnt from it. Sold.

3. Demonstrate smart disruption
Branson tells us that this means emphatically explaining how your new company can give the customer a better deal than competitors. In the employee/employee situation, demonstrate exactly why they should hire you over any other candidate. What makes you different?

4. Plan for sustainable growth
“explain how to tackle inevitable technological changes and market shifts that are heading your way” he tells us. In a situation where you are on the job hunt, plan for sustainable growth by keeping up to date with the latest technological changes and market shifts personally. Enroll on courses, volunteer, keep up to date with the latest news and market developments in your field. Don’t get left behind. The longer you are out of a role, can often meant he harder it is to secure your next role – why not bridge the gap, keep your skills up to date?

5. Show your strengths
Showing perspective investors that you have the right people working in your new company is the key to pitching according to Branson. This goes without saying, when selling yourself as a candidate – you have to show your strengths! It never amazes me how many times in interviews, candidates openly provide their weaknesses or explain the skills that they do not have rather than truly selling with a passion, the skills they do have or even the transferrable skills they have. Be your own cheerleader!

Selling does not come easy for everyone, but if you plan and deliver with confidence your audience will be receptive. Whether you are selling an inanimate object or your own skills and experience. Set yourself an objective. What do I want to achieve from this?

Catch the Fish! Philosophy

I recently read the book Fish! and I have to say ...I am hooked.  By no means new (developed in last 90's), if you haven’t explored the Fish! Philosophy then I’d urge you to do so.  Inspired by the fun, high energy style of a real business, the Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle, the philosophy follows four simple practices which can be adopted in any workplace to improve teamwork, shape a productive and fun workplace culture and help individuals bring new energy and drive to their work.

The four interconnecting practices as described on the Fish! website are:

Be There: When people need you, they need all of you. Setting aside distractions and judgments to be fully present is a sign of respect. It improves communication and strengthens relationships.

Play: You can be serious about your work without taking yourself so seriously. Play is a mindset more than a specific activity. It allows you to throw yourself with enthusiasm and creativity into whatever you are doing, in a way that is natural, not forced. "Playing” with ideas helps you find solutions to everyday challenges.

Make Their Day: Simple gestures of thoughtfulness, thanks and recognition make people feel appreciated and valued. When you make someone else feel good, you feel good too.

Choose Your Attitude: To actually choose how you respond to life, not just react, you must be intentional. When you get up, decide who you want to "be" today. Moment-to-moment awareness is key. Ask yourself throughout the day, "What is my attitude right now? Is it helping the people who depend on me? Is it helping me to be most effective?"
