Michelle Successfully Passes GPHR Exam!

SteppingStones is delighted and proud to announce that Michelle Gibbon, Staffing Coordinator, has successfully passed her certification exam and is now officially qualified as a Global Professional in Human Resources!  The GPHR is a prestigious qualification received through the HR Certification Institute, and demonstrates that Michelle has "met with distinction the high standards of education, experience and demonstrated knowledge established by the Institute."
Prior to writing the exam on 1st December 2012, Michelle completed a three-month GPHR preparation course through UCCI, along with several fellow HR Professionals working in the Cayman Islands.
When asked how it felt to complete the course and receive her qualification, Michelle proudly said "It was hard work - we spent countless hours learning and studying in and out of the classroom, and we all gave it 120%. The fact that our group had a near 80% success rate also shows the hard work and dedication given to us by our instructor, Bonalyn Nelson. I am thrilled to have achieved this qualification, and given how much of our work here is done on a global scale, I am confident that this will allow me to continue to contribute to the field of HR and Recruitment in Cayman and at SteppingStones."
Congratulations Michelle!

Pirates Week Festivals

Pirates Week 2012 started on Thursday 8th November and will end on Sunday 18th November 2012. The week will encompass eleven fun filled days with music, street dances, competitions, games, wonderful local food and drink, kids day, glittering parade, sports events for everyone, Heritage Days, pirate invasion and fireworks galore! There is just too much going on for you to miss out on.

The festival started with a fantastic steel pan competition and kick-off party, with spectacular fireworks on Friday night. With the crowning of the Festival Queen and the opening Street Dance and Food Festival on that night there is no better place to be in the Caribbean.

On Saturday there was a mock ‘pirate invasion’ from the sea! Two old-time sailing vessels, loaded with pirates made a Saturday surprise landing at the bowl-shaped George Town harbour with the pirates capturing the 'Governor'. Thousands of people lined the streets to watch the spectacle and its all good-natured fun with a new twist every year. Families just love it. It's the only event of its kind in the Caribbean region.

Please click here, for a list of all of the events for the rest of the week.

Cayman Islands Immigration Law

There has been an amendment to the Cayman Islands Immigration Law and I have attached ‘The Immigration (Amendment) (No.3) Regulations, 2012’ for your information.

In summary, the Cayman Islands government has approved the occupations for which 10-year work permits which were approved in regulations made by Cabinet last week.

Significant additions have also been made to the list of temporary job-related visits for which no work permit is required. The government has also determined fees for various applications and grants of permits; including permanent residence for those with independent means and residence for those with a “substantial business presence” in the Islands.

The following occupations are eligible for the grant of a work permit for up to 10 years: managing director, chief executive officer, general manager, vice president, chief financial officer, chief operating officer, chief underwriting officer, chief actuary, chief reinsurance underwriter, directors for fund services, directors for client services, fund administration managers and fund services managers.

There are a few occupations within the reinsurance and fund administration industries that have been exempted for work permit fees for a period of five years starting with the worker’s first arrival in the Islands. Those jobs include; Executive Administrative Assistant; Personal Assistant; Senior Administrative Assistant and Executive Secretary.

Independent means
The regulations set certain requirements on the new immigration category of permanent residence for those with independent means.

Among those requirements are that the person being granted such a certificate, which allows them to remain in Cayman for the rest of their lives, would have to satisfy the chief immigration officer that they had invested in $1.6 million worth of developed real estate within the Islands.

There is also a quota placed on permanent residence for those with independent means of 250 such grants allowed per year.

The one-time issue fee for a certificate of permanent residence for those with independent means is set at $100,000 in the regulations.

In addition, those who are granted such a certificate would have to pay a $1,000 per year fee for each dependant they bring to the Islands.

In addition to permanent residence for those with independent means, the 25-year residential certificate (not permanent residence) for those of independent means has had its income requirements lowered.

People qualifying for residence in that category must now have an annual income of $120,000 [down from $150,000] and have invested at least $500,000 in Cayman [down from $750,000].

Substantial business

The regulations also set more ground rules for the establishment of what’s known as a substantial business presence within the Cayman Islands.

Being granted such a residency certificate under those rules requires the chief immigration officer to take into account whether the business has established an actual physical presence within the Cayman Islands and if the business employs, or will employ, four full-time employees who are legally resident within Cayman for at least nine months a year.

Approved categories of business under the substantial business presence section include: fund administration, brokerage services, investment and fund management services, investment banking, financial trading, captive insurance or reinsurance management, reinsurance underwriting, actuarial services, insurance claims management, hedge fund incubation or any company registered as an exempted company under section 164 of the Companies Law [2011 Revision].

Seeing PINK!

It may be the SteppingStones brand colour, but today we're all dressed in pink for another reason - to show our support for Breast Cancer Awareness month!

For every photo we receive from our temporary staff dressed in pink today, we are making an extra donation on their behalf to the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens, who are the main driving force on-island behind the charity.

Below is a shot of Michelle all decked out in pink (including her computer and iPad screens!). More photos to follow!

Cayman Island comes out on Top

The Cayman Islands came out on top at the 2012 Captive Live conference where they were named "Offshore Domicile of the Year".    This important industry conference, hosted by Captive Review magazine saw more that 400 captive management professional from across the United States gather in Chicago.

The Cayman Islands won out against  tough competition from other jurisdications including Anguilla, Bermuda and Nevis who were all judged by an independent panel of risk managers.  Nicholas Leighton of Atlas Insurance Management accepted the award on behalf of the jurisdiction and the Insurance Managers Association of Cayman. s"To receive public recognition of this calibre is a real feather in Cayman's cap and underscores the ongoing work by members of our industry to ensure that Cayman continues to be a desirable domicile for the world's captives." said Mr Leighton.

Cayman recognised with rewards

The Cayman Islands has been named the Caribbean’s Leading Dive Destination at a private sector awards ceremony.

The accolade was given at the World Travel Awards, which is now in its 19th year and billed as ‘the travel industry Oscars’ by organisers. It’s voted on by travel agents worldwide and nominations are either from the World Travel Awards, self-nominations or previous winners.
Jane van der Bol, executive director of the Cayman Islands Tourism Association, said that given the diving options worldwide, it was critical that Cayman received honours.

“Divers take their dive experiences seriously. They spend a significant amount of money and time training to become a diver and then when they pay for a dive vacation, they want a varied, unique and incredible dive experience,” she said. “With Cayman’s DIVE365 programme of 365 dive sites in our three islands, we have a dive experience like no other for every diver. We deliver on this promise and the award confirms our product.”

Cayman Islands Premier McKeeva Bush and Director of Tourism Shomari Scott travelled to the Turks & Caicos ceremony to receive the awards. “In these austere times, the tourism industry has had to make tough decisions, rethink the way we do business and work harder and smarter to ensure we provide our visitors with exceptional value,” Mr. Bush said.
"Receiving awards such as these positively validates those efforts, underscoring that our collective vision and strategy is on the right track. I wholeheartedly commend and applaud our tourism industry partners for their accomplishments on behalf of their organisations and the Cayman Islands tourism product”.

Rain or shine...

The Cayman Islands, nestled in the heart of the Western Caribbean, boasts sunny and warm weather almost all year-round. However, September and October tend to be a bit on the wet side and it's essential to have a good umbrella to keep you dry.

Michelle and Rosie got caught in the rain today on the roof of our office building, and they were very thankful to have their SteppingStones umbrellas at hand!

New Immigration Fees in Cayman

As part of revenue raising efforts by the Cayman Islands Government, we saw the implementation of increased work permit fees take effect yesterday, 13th September 2012.

According to the Caymanian Compass, "The work permit fee increases are budgeted to bring in some $9.4 million more in revenues than they did during the previous budget year. The Cayman Islands raised about $48 million in revenues (unaudited figure) from work permits in the 2011/12 year, compared to an anticipated $57.4 million in the current 2012/13 fiscal year."

Just to clarify for our readers, these newly imposed fee increases do not affect costs for any candidates looking to make a move to Cayman for employment. When foreign workers are hired for employment in the Cayman Islands, your prospective employer must sponsor a work permit application on your behalf, and as such, the work permit fees are paid for by the employer.

What kind of an impact do you think this will have on the Cayman Islands?

For more information on the new fees and other changes, please read the news article here.

SteppingStones Rugby Team Excels in Division 1!

"The spoils of division one went to Stepping Stones who rose to the top of the table with two great wins. Their first match, a top of the table clash with reigning champions Maples1, saw them unseat the three times titleholders 4-2. Scott McCarty, Riley Mullen, Dougie Anderson and Vangie Raftopolous converted the chances for Stepping Stones with Adam Huckle and Jo Ziegler replying for Maples1.

Ziegler, who is having a fine season with four tries in five games, did more than most to drag Maples1 back into the game, but this was not going to be her day. This is their first loss of the season but Stepping Stones have not lost a match since their inception. Is it a case of “The King is Dead, Long Live the King”? It is too early to tell as we approach the mid-point of the season but the Stones’ play with a great fluidity that is hard to repel. One thing is for sure, Maples1 won’t go down without a fight.

Stepping Stones easily beat Ogier in their second match 10-1 to consolidate their position at the top of the table, Lisa Bird putting in an Most Valuable Player performance with two tries. Maples1, playing with the fury of a lover scorned, took DART apart and registered a 10-1 scoreline."

Sounds like our team is doing great, considering it's our first year in the league! To see the rest of the Touch Rugby 2012 updates, please read the full article on cayCompass.com
