Happy Thanksgiving

Although Thanksgiving is an American holiday, it is also celebrated here in the Cayman Islands and with Thanksgiving just around the corner; we thought we would share some Caymanian Thanksgiving traditions.

In Cayman, Thanksgiving is a weekend-long national celebration during the month of December to honor the Caymanian heritage, culture and way of life and for the community to express gratitude for our many blessings.
To learn more about Cayman Thanksgiving, click on the link: http://caymanthanksgiving.ky/

As we all know, one of the best parts of this holiday is the food! The menu for Thanksgiving usually consists of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, creamed onions and the list goes on and on. However, the treats and desserts are always a delight.

This Thanksgiving make the last course count by indulging in a classic Thanksgiving pie with your family and friends.
                           Southern Pecan Pie

The secret to this rich pie is cooking the sugar and corn syrup first. Preparing the crust following the filling also will make the appearance of the pie look delectable as well as shielding the edges with foil to prevent over-browning. This dessert will surely have your guests giving thanks long after the holiday.

Young at Arts (YAA) porgramme - Presents Ti Jean and his brothers

Young At Arts (YAA) is an educational youth programme of the Cayman National Cultural Foundation supported by Bank of Butterfields.

The company is guided by an artistic philosophy that recognises that Caymanian cultural forms and enactments, and their creative interpretation and expression through art, are vital in the moulding of a Caymanian aesthetic. This philosophy is best articulated by our mindfulness of the fact that the highest forms of art, even when specific to the culture out of which they emerged, are capable of universal communication and understanding. The principal purpose of the programme is to train young creative minds in the practical disciplines of the performing arts.

Young at Arts (YAA) porgramme - Presents Ti Jean and his brothers at Harquail Theater this weekend August 8, 9, 10th. Please go out and support our young people of the Cayman Islands. Tickets are only CI$10.00.

May 19th is Discovery Day!

This coming Monday, May 19th we will enjoy another public holiday as we celebrate Discovery Day! In honor of the day, here are a few facts to aid you in ‘discovering’ more about the Islands. You may also click on the link below to learn more about our beautiful islands!

About Grand Cayman – Culture

Grand Cayman boasts the largest population of the three sister islands, representing diverse cultures from across the globe with cultural influences primarily from the United Kingdom, North America, and nearby Jamaica.

While English is the primary and official language, Caymanian residents speak it with a sing-song lilt, likely a combination of accents from European & Jamaican settlers. It is with this lilting accent that you will be pleasantly greeted – Caymanians are very friendly, and kind greetings are commonly exchanged.

There are many restaurants on Grand Cayman, conveniently located near The Avalon’s spacious Cayman condos. Restaurant fare ranges from beach casual to fine dining with a variety of international flavours, but the cuisine primarily reflects the island’s proximity to the sea as well as to Jamaica with a large selection of succulent seafood and spicy Jamaican seasonings.

A peaceful community with a thriving heritage of folklore, music, and customs passed down through the generations, Grand Cayman is not well known for its active nightlife. There are, however, plenty of activities to enjoy during daylight hours, including world-class diving – among the many appealing attractions that draw vacationers from around the world.

Love food

Love food? Well, Cayman has got you covered and so does Andrea Poe! Here are her picks for the Top 10 Restaurants on the Island:

1.     Ortanqiue, Think coffee and cocoa encrusted salmon and the mega-sized (16 ounce) pork chop slathered in a BBQ sauce made from local mangoes. Locally sourced desserts, like banana fritters with rum raisin ice cream and a classic coconut cake, are dreamy.
2.     Rum Point, On a weekday night (weekends are packed) and you may think you have died and gone to heaven. The restaurant is on a quiet perch at the end of the island, at the mouth of shallows, where even kids can snorkel.
3.     Duke’s, On the non-beach side of Seven Miles Beach delivers some of the island's best smoky BBQ. Try the Cayman jerk chicken, which is rich and flavorful, or the short ribs braised in local beer.
4.     SunShine Grill, For $10.95 you get a plate of mahi tacos topped with avocado sauce, Swiss cheese and cabbage that's so flavorful that you will be jonzing for them when you get home.
5.     (The Ritz) Blue by Eric Ripert, This is where to go for one of the most indulgent and interesting seafood meals of your life. A sample: Local tuna paired with foie gras, halibut "pot au feu" made with rich black truffle, striped bass topped with rum hibiscus.
6.     Brasserie, Is in George Town is as hyper local as you can get. Try the tartare or ceviche, both of which highlight the best of the garden and the sea.
7.     Waterfront Urban Diner, A new addition to the island, marries a hipster aesthetic (minimalist design, ceramic trophy heads and animal salt and pepper shakers) with earnest, straightforward good eats. The face-sized sweet roll has already become the stuff of legends.
8.     Michaels Genuine, In Camana Bay, The wood-fired oven turns out specialties like wood-fired breadfruit salad with avocado, double yolk eggs (served on crostini) and lionfish served with pickled mango.
9.     Vivine's Kitchen Is literally Vivine's kitchen. The restaurant is at her modest home on the East End; her menu is as authentically Caymanian as it gets: conch and welk, along with sea turtle and goat stew.
10.  Mizu, A sampling of the variety: Korean BBQ cauliflower, Japanese hamachi nigiri, Thai calamari with nahm jim dressing, classic Vietnamese pho soup and Cambodian grapefruit salad with mint and peanuts.

For those of you that enjoy the snow…you won’t find it in Cayman as the average December temperature is 79°F/26°C.  However, there are lots of activities to enjoy and the island is full of Christmas spirit.

Many activities happen throughout the season in Camana Bay, including a boat parade of lights, Cayman Youth Choir concert, pictures with Caribbean Santa, fireworks and even snow days.  For a list of holiday events, click here.

If you love Christmas lights, you must drive by the Ms Bodden’s house on South Church Street, across Sunset House.

This island is small - but still big enough for a ‘road trip’

Grand Cayman is relatively small - just over 100 square miles (or 265 square kilometers) - and the speed limit never exceeds 50 miles per hour, but that doesn’t have to stop you from taking a road trip.

If you haven't driven ALL the way around the island, you are missing out.  A leisurely drive ‘out East’ is the perfect way to spend a day.

First stop: Bodden Town.

The coastal road offers gorgeous sea views at almost every turn.  About 15 minutes from George Town you will arrive in historic Bodden Town.  To experience the barefoot beach atmosphere, stop at Grapetree Fish Fry for some fresh snapper or Southcoast Grill for great food and breathtaking views.

Shortly after Bodden Town, the Blow Holes and Lover’s Wall will come up on your right.  The waves on the south side of the island are often strong, so it is likely the natural blowholes will be active.  Make sure you have your camera ready and if you time it just right you are bound to get some great pictures.

Next stop: East End.

Snorkelling in Grand Cayman

There are many perks to living in Grand Cayman….just a few of them include: great food, high standard of living, warm weather, beautiful beaches and endless possibilities of water activities.

Being a small island, not matter where you live or work, you are always close to the Caribbean Sea.  Around Cayman you can dip your toe in the water and try out water skiing, jet skiing, paddle boarding, scuba diving, fishing and of course….snorkelling.

Snorkelling is a fun, relaxing way to spend your afternoon or weekend and is an activity for most ages.  The crystal clear water and luscious sea life makes snorkelling a breeze.  The Cayman Islands Tourism Association (CITA) has chosen their 5 favourite snorkel spots http://www.cita.ky/what-to-do/fav5snorkelspots.  Our team agrees…these are some of the best!
