Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricane season in Cayman runs from 1st June - 30th November, which means Hurricane season is right around the corner, and now is the time to start getting prepared. As Grand Cayman is a very flat island, problems are created when sea levels start to rise due to a storm surge, so make sure that in the event of a major hurricane, that you can move to at least 10 feet above sea level. You should also consider finding higher ground to park your vehicle. Camana Bay offers a service, where for CI$100 per year, you can store your car in one of their multi-level car parks whenever a major storm threatens.

In general, due to strict building codes, most modern buildings on island are built to withstand a category three hurricane, and some are even rated to withstand a category five hurricane.

A very good hurricane information pack is available from Hazard Management Cayman Islands (Tel: (345) 945 4624) or can be downloaded from www.caymanprepared.gov.ky.

Don't wait until a Hurricane is foretasted to get prepared, start preparing now!
