October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month worldwide and there are a number of organised events in the Cayman Islands to raise both money and awareness to help fight the disease.
The Caymanian Compass has shared some details of these upcoming events, as follows:
Dive for a Good Cause
On Saturday, October 13, Divetech is inviting people to dive for the cause: they’re offering shore dives from both their West Bay locations – Lighthouse Point and Cobalt Coast – including tanks, weights and Divers Against Cancer T-Shirts for a minimum donation of $25. One hundred per cent of the proceeds will go directly to the Cayman Islands Cancer Society.
Because pink is the colour associated with breast cancer awareness, Cobalt Coast will be providing snacks and pink refreshments to participating divers and prizes will be awarded to male or female divers who show up in their (or someone else’s) bra – or wearing something pink. Divers are welcome after 1pm on Saturday and prize giving will take place from 4pm onward at Cobalt Coast.
Go for the Chop
Eclipze Hair Design and Day Spa will once again be opening their doors to the public on Sunday, 21 October between 2 and 6pm for their annual Cut-A-Thon. No appointments will be taken, so it will be first come, first served for mini manicures, wet cuts, threading, and massages for $1 per minute. The Eclipze stylists will be joined by volunteer stylists from other salons on islands including Lion’s Den, Renaissance, Focus, Spa Esprit, Artista and La Mer.
Pampering for the Greater Good
Sameena’s Beauty is holding a Day of Beauty in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month on Sunday, October 28.
The beauty salon on the waterfront in George Town will be open for business as usual on Sunday, offering their full range of services – including manicures, pedicures, hair styling, massage, facials, threading and waxing. Prices to the public will the standard prices – but Sameena’s will be donating one hundred per cent of the proceeds to the Cayman Islands Cancer Society
Some History
October, recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month worldwide, also became a
reality for the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens many years ago when one of its
members, Merilda Miller had a dear friend and colleague who was diagnosed with
the disease. The Club set out to make support and early detection information
more available to women living in the Cayman Islands, hence the first Breast
Cancer Awareness Month in October 1997. Since that time the Club has supported
the month long event through community outreach, the issuing of free mammogram
vouchers, fundraisers and educational materials.
The Lions Club of Tropical Gardens realizes that this programme helps both
men and women cope with breast cancer, beginning with the possibility of its
diagnosis and continuing through treatment and recovery, if necessary. The
recommendation is that mammograms are done once every two years for those over
40; and once every year for those who are 50 and over.
