Presenteeism - what's the story?

According to a new survey from the Chartered Institute of Professional Development, the average number of days employees are absent from work has fallen from 7.7days to 6.8 days a year per employee.  This is a positive sign, an indication of the increased dedication of the working population….or is it?

At the same time as employees are taking less sick days, almost a third of surveyed companies saw a rise in the number of people turning up sick at work rather than staying at home.   One of the main reasons for this was the fear of redundancies.  But, being present at work, does not necessarily mean being productive at work.  Add to that the potential for other employees getting sick due to exposure to their ill colleague and the there is a real cost to the increase in “presenteeism”.
