Should you check your e-mail whilst on vacation?

If you're going on vacation this Christmas, you may try to stay logged off completely while you're away, however for some of us (myself included), remaining completely offline can cause, and not relieve, stress. Instead, you may consider designating a point person who can filter important messages to you, or telling your team to send you only urgent messages and that you'll be logging on -- once a day. Here's why:

You can prevent a small issue from growing. Left unchecked, a little problem can transform from a minor issue the day after you leave, into a major headache by the time you come back. Although, don't be too quick to respond or get involved, as sometimes things work themselves out.

It may encourage you to go away. Just knowing that you can still log in daily to check e-mails gives some of us peace of mind.

It can take the sting out of your return. As soon as you are on your return journey home, you will inevitably start thinking of the things you need to do when you're back, and going through your inbox is where it starts.  If you are already on top of this, it will make for a smoother return.

However with all that said, it is important to spend time with family and friends whilst on vacation, as this will not only benefit your family but you as well.  You need to unwind, relax and get back in touch with 'you'.  Happy Holidays!
